Brushing your teeth is one of the most important parts of keeping your mouth healthy. But it’s not just about brushing twice a day... how you brush matters too!
Here are five simple tips to help you get the most out of your brushing routine.
Aim to brush your teeth twice a day for about two minutes each time. Brushing before bed is especially important because it helps remove the plaque and food that have built up throughout the day.
Try using a timer, song, or two-minute brushing app if it helps you keep track of the time.
Your teeth have more than just a front surface! Make sure you gently clean the:
Outside surfaces — the side facing your cheeks and lips
Inside surfaces — the side facing your tongue
Chewing surfaces — the tops of your back teeth
Take your time and work your way around your mouth so you don't accidentally miss any areas. A tip is to brush in circular motions.
Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and protect your teeth from decay. When brushing, use a fluoride toothpaste and follow the recommended amount for your age.
You don't need to cover your entire toothbrush with toothpaste, a small amount is enough.
Brushing harder doesn't mean brushing better!
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, controlled movements. Pressing too hard can irritate your gums and may contribute to enamel or gum damage over time.
Think thorough, not forceful.
After brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste rather than rinsing your mouth with water right away.
This allows some of the fluoride from your toothpaste to remain on your teeth and continue providing protection.
A good brushing routine doesn't have to be complicated. Twice a day, two minutes, fluoride toothpaste, and thorough gentle brushing can go a long way toward keeping your teeth and gums healthy.
And remember — your dental professional can give you advice based on your individual oral-health needs.
